Cleaning running shoes is an easy process and it could extend the lifespan of the shoes if done in the right way. However, not too many people know the right way of doing it. Here is how to clean a running shoe.
You must always know that cleaning running shoes involve three cleaning process,
- Cleaning the exterior of the shoes
- Cleaning the interior of the shoes
- Cleaning the shoelace
A running shoe could be claimed to be cleaned only if you complete all these 3 cleaning processes.
- Cleaning the exterior of running shoes –
Cleaning the exterior of running shoes is commonly the easiest cleaning process, however, it needs to be done in the right way and with the right accessories. Here is how to clean it.
Step 1: Remove the insoles and lace from the running shoes. While removing the insole be careful, pull it out slowly. If you are careless, the insole could tear.
Step 2: In a bucket or sink, fill warm water and then mix laundry detergent in it. The water should not be too warm and too much detergent should not be added.
Step 3: Now, pick a dry toothbrush or scrubber and then use it to rub off the grime, dirt, and mud on the shoe. Remember to rub all over the shoes and not just the sole.
Step 4: Once you have done rubbing off the dirt and grime on the shoes, you need to pick up a sponge/soft towel/soft bush. Make sure it is clean, now, dip the bush/sponge/towel in the sink. The towel/sponge/bush should have absorbed water and soap, do not squeeze to remove the water.
Step 5: Now, use it to scrub the exterior of the shoe. You must consider using more soap on the problematic stains. If you find it difficult to clean the corners and hard-to-reach spots, consider using a toothbrush. All you have to do is, apply some laundry detergent on the head and then brush the corners and hard-to-reach parts.
Step 6: After scrubbing/rubbing using sponge/bush/towel/toothbrush. You should dip the towel/sponge/soft bush in regular water and then use it to remove the excess soap on the shoe.
- Cleaning the interior of the shoes –
Cleaning the interior of a running shoe is the best way to get rid of the foul odour and to keep your shoe fresh. Too much sweat and dirt inside the shoe could harm your feet. Cleaning the interior of a running shoe involves two processes, cleaning the insole and cleaning the inside of the shoe.
Step 1: With warm water, laundry detergent, and sponge clean the insole. All you have to do is dip the sponge in soap water and then use the sponge to scrub/rub to clean the insole. If the insole is tough, you could also consider dipping it directly into the soap water to clean it.
Step 2: Once you have rubber or scrubber the insole with soap water, you need to wipe it to remove the excess soap. If possible dip the insole in regular water three or four times till all the soap leaves it.
Step 3: After cleaning the insole, you need to clean the inside of the shoe. Cleaning the interior of the running shoe is not easy, you need to first wear two or three layers of socks on your hand.
Step 4: Dip your hand in regular water, now put your hands into the shoe and rub the inside of the shoe slowly. The layers of socks on your hand would act as a sponge. Keep rubbing the inside of the shoe for 3 minutes.
Step 5: Now, remove the socks from your hand and then wear another few socks on your hand and then put your hands into the shoe to remove the excess water droplets from the shoe.
- Cleaning the lace –
Cleaning the shoelace is comparatively more difficult and challenging than cleaning the interior and exterior of the shoe itself. You need to have patience and you need to use a toothbrush and laundry detergent on the entire lace. Remember, you need to rub the entire lace with the toothbrush and laundry soap and then dip the lace in regular water.
Once you have completed all the three steps, place your shoe, insole, and lace under the sun for a maximum of 3-hours. In between, check them to find out if it is dry or still wet. Do not allow a cleaned dry shoe or parts to lie under the sun for more than 3-hours, it could wrinkle or fade.
